Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
Strengthening message discipline during global health crises
Situation Summary
Situation Summary
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention operates at the center of public health emergencies, where scientific uncertainty, political scrutiny, and media intensity converge. During outbreaks and national health threats, senior physician-scientists must communicate complex, evolving information in a way that maintains public trust while withstanding political and media pressure.
At the height of the H1N1 pandemic – and in subsequent infectious disease crises ranging from Zika to COVID-19 – CDC leadership faced sustained national and international attention. Vaccine safety, food-borne illness, and emerging infectious disease response required clarity, consistency, and credibility under real-time scrutiny.
Qorvis Solution
Qorvis Solution
Qorvis was retained to provide media training and message development for senior physician-scientists and subject-matter experts operating in this high-pressure environment.
We conducted a comprehensive audit of existing media coverage to identify vulnerabilities, inconsistencies, and areas requiring clarification. From that assessment, we developed tailored messaging frameworks and disciplined communication strategies for CDC leadership, including Director Thomas Frieden, Chief Medical Officer Anne Schuchat, and more than 15 senior experts.
Qorvis trainers spent a full week onsite in Atlanta conducting message refinement sessions and simulated interviews designed to prepare leadership for sustained national and international media engagement. The work focused on ensuring that complex public health guidance could be delivered clearly, accurately, and consistently across platforms.
The team later supported CDC experts during subsequent global health crises, helping maintain authoritative and coordinated communication during rapidly evolving emergencies.
CDC leadership entered national and international media engagements with disciplined messaging, improved consistency, and strengthened credibility during periods of intense public scrutiny. The training reinforced the agency’s ability to communicate evolving scientific guidance clearly and authoritatively while protecting institutional trust during global health emergencies.
